Why Not Just Use Petroleum Jelly?
I was given a sample tube of petroleum for my tattoo. No thanks.
There are a million reasons why we go toxin-free in this house, but in case you feel like reading up on why NOT to put toxins on your skin, here's something to read.
How I even managed to have tattoos
If you had told me 4 years ago that I'd end up with tattoos, I'd swear it would never happen.
I mean, to me a person with tattoos always seemed scary. Intimidating. I was raised a 'good girl' with a certain idea about people with tattoos (omg....I was so judge-y!! SO SORRY!).
Then in my 20s I had friends with tattoos who were wonderful people! Not big, burly, and looking like they wanted to hurt me. Oh how imaginations run wild!
When my first son was born, my hubby got a tattoo with his name. It was super sexy, actually. Still, I never EVER would have considered getting one myself.
Then I had this inkling 3 years ago...well, why not just a teeny, small one? So I started with a yellow sun on my wrist that could only be seen in a certain type of light.
I loved it.
Here I am, on tattoo #4

What I do to care for my new tattoos
When I got my first tattoo, I decided to make my own lotion recipe. I was fantastic! In fact, it's this recipe right here (minus the zinc oxide for the sun protection, which is great for AFTER your tattoo heals).
However, we are currently on a 6-week road trip and this tattoo wasn't exactly planned for months like my other ones were. SoI didn't bring my tattoo lotion.
What I DID bring was my Correct X! And all my oils. Obviously.
Here's what I did to care for my new tattoo:
Mornings
- washed the area with On Guard foaming hand soap
- applied Correct X
During the day
- applied Frankincense Touch, Tea Tree Touch, and Lavender once
Bedtime
- washed the area with On Guard foaming hand soap
- applied 1 drop Helichrysum
- applied a light amount of Correct X
I did this for the first 3 days. Then I stopped doing the Tea Tree Touch and only used Frank and Lav at lunch time. I'm now on day 6 and my tattoo is pretty close to being fully completed in it's healing process!
** IMPORTANT TO NOTE: our tattoo needs time to 'breathe', so covering it up with oils all day long isn't great for it. This is why I only applied 3x/day and within an hour or so I could see everything was absorbed into my skin. That's a good thing!
Why Use Those Oils?
Oh, well, because they're the beeeessstttt. Also:
Frankincense Touch: Rejuvenates the skin and reduces the appearance of scars. As the king of essential oils, Frankincense is known to promote cellular health and immunity and can be consumed daily for these internal benefits.
Lavender Touch : Applied topically, Lavender is frequently used to reduce the appearance of skin imperfections and soothes occasional skin irritations.
Tea Tree Touch: Can be used to cleanse and purify the skin. It’s ideal to soothe occasional skin irritations and to use after shaving or on the bottoms of feet for a cooling effect.
Correct X: A multi-purpose, natural ointment that helps soothe skin and enhance the natural process of skin returning to a healthy state after being distressed.
Helichrysum: Improves appearance of the skin and referred to as “The Everlasting Flower” because of its rejuvenating benefits for the skin and ability to improve the complexion.
I hope my experience helps you when you decide to put beautiful art on your body!
