7 Symptoms of Detoxing and How to Deal

It’s the New Year as I write this and I’m 4 days into the dōTERRA Cleanse and Restore program. I do this twice a year and afterwards I always feel AMAZING!

BUT there are those first few days of a cleanse or detox where you start to experience symptoms associated with your body releasing all those toxins.

What’s a girl to do?

Well, turn to your oils, of course!

Here are the top common symptoms people experience and what you can do about them.

  1. Craving foods you know perfectly well you shouldn’t eat, but your tastebuds are throwing a tantrum. I’m all about Slim & Sassy when it comes to my typical cravings. When things get REALLY bad, I’ll turn to the dōTERRA Slim & Sassy gum and chew one of those bad boys until the cravings {for chocolate and chocolate, oh and chocolate} subside. I’ll pop a drop or two of Slim & Sassy, Grapefruit, or Wild Orange in my water, also. Which one I choose will depend on what my body is craving. Smell what you’ve got - your body will tell you what you need.

  2. Nauseous feeling. Ugh! This is one of my LEAST fav things. And it often has to do with not drinking enough water (refer to trick 2 below and number 4, tummy issues).

  3. Breakouts. Who wants to look like a teenager during detoxing? No one. Turn to Tea Tree (Meleleuca) for on the spot treatment. I’ll use one drop to dab on any issues on my face. And if you’re finding you get breakouts even when you’re NOT on a detox/cleanse, then you need to look at what you’re eating (sugar, wheat, dairy). Our body uses our skin to tell us something’s not right on the inside.

  4. Tummy issues. This is often a given on a cleanse. I mean, the whole point is to release toxins from the body. And that’s coming out of your body in one way or another! Grab your DigestZen/ZenGest and pop a drop on your belly, a drop under your tongue, or take a drop in a shot glass with water. Give yourself 10-15 minutes and things will be right again.

  5. Head tension. Another lovely affect of toxins escaping. Peppermint is your best friend. Take a drop on your finger and apply to your temples, behind your neck, and on your shoulders. Allow it to work it’s magic! You’ll feel the tingle within 3-5 minutes.

BONUS: Here are some tricks to get you feeling your best.

  1. Epsom salt bath with Lavender and Frankincense. Epsom salts are known for drawing out toxins. So help your body out and sit in a warm bath with 1-2 cups of epsom salts and 2 drops of Lavender and Frankincense. Your liver will thank you.

  2. Drinking a ton of water with Lemon. On any regular day, we should be drinking a minimum of half our body weight in ounces. On a detox, drink more! This will help to flush out all those toxins that have been built up and are being released.

  3. Quit the bad stuff 2 days before. I’m talking sugars, wheat, dairy, junk food. You know. When you give your body a break from the bad stuff just before starting a cleanse/detox, you’re going to experience a lot less symptoms of toxin release. Trust.
